Before India was known as an emerging region, it was an important market to Manitowoc. Manitowoc has been manufacturing tower cranes under license in India for almost 30 years and mobile cranes in the country through a partner for 15 years.
As India has become Asia’s second fastest-expanding economy behind only China, Manitowoc has continually increased its investment in the region. Manitowoc’s drive to serve India as locally as possible has led to the addition of regional sales offices as business and construction in India has increased. Manitowoc opened its third office in 2010, with the completion of a location in Chennai. Manitowoc also has offices in Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai.
Manitowoc cranes are also busily at work helping India to develop and modernize. Examples include:
- More than 300 Manitowoc cranes are working on the Jamnagar Refinery in Gujarat, India. The project, owned by Reliance Petroleum Ltd, is one of the largest refinery construction projects active in the world.
- Three India-made Potain tower cranes recently helped to construct the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, an office and residential building development.
- One of India’s largest energy contractors recently used a Manitowoc 18000 crawler crane to help with a major power plant expansion. Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd used the 18000 on the Gujarat State Energy Generation plant, a part of India’s initiative to expand its energy infrastructure.
- Potain cranes helped to build the $67 million the “Wave 1st Silver Tower” retail and office development in Noida, India.

Manufacturing
Manitowoc increased its stake in India in 2007, acquiring the factory in Pune that had manufactured tower cranes under license for 25 years. Manitowoc’s Potain-brand tower cranes manufactured at the Pune factory, employ the same industry-leading engineering and quality standards as cranes made at Potain’s factories in France, Italy, Portugal and China.
Potain cranes range in lift capacities from 5 t to 25 t, and jib lengths range from 50 m to 80 m. They are sold directly to customers as well as through Manitowoc’s dealer network across India and neighboring countries Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Cranes from the top-slewing MC range are manufactured at the Pune factory.
Manitowoc also manufactures Grove rough-terrain cranes in Kolkata with partner Tractors India Limited. TIL, a Grove partner since 1982, recently delivered its 5,000th mobile crane.
Grove mobile cranes, including truck-mounted, rough-terrain and industrial cranes --range in lift capacities from 12 t to 75 t. TIL is also the dealer for Grove cranes in India, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar. Grove mobile cranes are also manufactured in Pennsylvania, U.S.; Germany; and Italy. These models are also available in India through TIL.
Also available in India are Manitowoc crawler cranes, made at Manitowoc’s factories in Wisconsin, U.S. and in China. Manitowoc’s crawler cranes range in lift capacities from 73 t to 2,300 t. Manitowoc cranes are sold by dealer TIL throughout India.
Service
Manitowoc Crane Care is the leading customer support program in the industry and stands fully ready to support Manitowoc’s cranes in India. The customer support program offers parts, service, training and technical assistance to help customers maximize productivity with Manitowoc cranes.
Manitowoc Crane Care runs a full program of online and in-person training courses in India. Manitowoc’s team trains customers at one of its specially designed teaching facilities and uses practical training with live equipment on the test pad. Instructors can also travel to customer locations throughout India to conduct on-site training.
Manitowoc Crane Care also stocks an extensive supply of spare parts in India and maintains a team of highly trained service engineers to assist customers. A variety of other services are available, all designed for crane users.

Manitowoc’s efforts in India are led by Raman Joshi, managing director and vice president. Joshi is an experienced engineering professional and has held a number of positions at Manitowoc, including Director of Marketing in Asia-Pacific and Global Product Manager for Manitowoc crawler cranes.
